ARTIST STATEMENT

My work is a journey of exploration in creativity. The creative process is an exercise in expression, process and discovery. I have enjoyed creating art all my life. I am a Graphic Designer and own marketing and design agency, where I create work on the computer. The reason I enjoy creating the multi-media work is it gives me a hands-on experience which I find freeing and even mediative. Ripping paper, painting, layering, reworking, and examining is a tangible experience that I love when making my pieces.

I am inspired by artists who employ color well and express themselves in fluid and surprising shapes. Joan Mitchell’s brushwork and color, Helen Frankenthaler’s color fields, and Georgia O’Keefe’s use of composition of a real object which looks abstract based on the perspective of the image are some things I take inspiration from. Visiting museums and seeing art always stokes my creative fire and is a great inspiration.

In my multi-media collage work, I use papers in a variety of textures and colors, colored pencils, ink, watercolor and acrylic paints - anything that creates different visual layers in the space of a work. I also like to use the extra paper pieces left over from creating monoprints and found paper like maps to add dimension as well. My work uses vibrant color palettes and layers to build unique pieces.

Through this creative process, I try to discover the unexpected and emotional connections, eventual revealing an image or a reflection of a feeling. When I feel my artwork has finished it’s journey, I look forward to starting a new piece.
