Artist Statement

My work, whether paintings or sculpture is very intuitive, introspective and spontaneous. My pieces begin by asking, "what happens if?" Exploration of shape and seeing movement in the materials allows me to build a dialog between materials and surface. Textures in nature are an inspiration for my work. I am fascinated by seemingly ordinary surfaces. If you really look, those surfaces are far from it. Playing with both texture and shape sparked this series, River and Rust. The flotsam and jetsam of the Delaware River are the materials used. The elements - water, air and earth have transformed the hard edges of the wood, added patina and rust to the metal. To some it suggests decay, to me it shows how the elements are alive and transform. Nature has become my collaborator in this collection.
