ARTIST STATEMENT

I create as a way to heal from big life events, especially traumatic ones. In particular, I grieve through my hands. I was my mom's sole caregiver, and when she died last October, I went in search of a way to express all my jumbled feelings.

I happened upon a little workshop on cardboard loom weaving using a popsicle stick needle, offered at a local library. And I was hooked. Within a month I created my own technique of incorporating discarded and upcycled objects into the warp. I bought all my tools used and worked with thrifted or donated yarn.

I was literally weaving items, over and under, over and under, and at the same time figuratively weaving a new life for myself. The nurturing I was missing came out in my art with the use of 'feminine' items like wooden spoons, wood spools, roses, costume jewelry bits, and glove forms.

With bright colors and exciting textures, and touches of whimsy, I injected joy into my healing process. I also love a good puzzle and the assembly of all the pieces in such a way that the weaving maintains its integrity is my favorite part of the challenge.

Knowing all this, I invite you to look at my submissions and enjoy a visual and tactile vacation from your everyday life, knowing that tears and smiles can co-exist.
