I've been an artist and an art teacher my whole adult life, and I can't separate the two. I'm a visual learner — I draw what I hear, keeping illustrated notes at lectures and sending the speaker a copy afterward, so they see which ideas landed.

I carve blocks and pull prints — I started carving because I couldn't find the stamp images I wanted. I paint. I build sand sculptures and giant paper mache heads for parades and protests. I teach block printing, but what I'm really teaching is nerve: how to put a gouge to a block without fear.

In Camden I taught as much science as art: Monarch butterflies, factory smoke, the lead in my students' own pipes. While I stayed out of politics in the classroom, out of it I have free rein: daily cartoons and the issues I care about — kindness, unions, honesty.

If I had to summarize the work, it's as much activism as art. Speak truth to power and duck.

Jane Kandy Lippincott (b. 1950, Mount Holly, NJ) is an artist and art educator whose work runs from political cartoons and relief prints to painting, paper mache, and sand sculpture. She is also a proud mother and grandmother, blessed with a close family.

She graduated from Glassboro State College (now Rowan University) in January 1972 with a degree in Art Education and a minor in Life Sciences. Within a year she and her husband, Gregory, had joined the Peace Corps, and she began teaching science on Moen Island in the Truk Lagoon, which is part of Micronesia's Eastern Caroline Islands.

When she returned to the United States, Kandy taught art in Haddon Heights and Florence, New Jersey before deciding to strike out on her own. She apprenticed to a master sign painter and trained in commercial art and offset printing, then founded and ran Kandy Lippincott Signs and Murals for twelve years. She painted murals in restaurants and malls; lettered trucks, helicopters, airplanes and race cars; pinstriped for auto body shops — pretty much anything that could be done with a brush.

A teacher at heart, Kandy returned to art education at Lanning Square Family School in South Camden — although her teaching always includes as much science as art. After 25 years there, she retired in 2012 — the same year she lost her husband of 40 good years, Gregory.

Now on her self-labeled "3rd Life Journey," she teaches block printing to small groups, leads workshops for art educators across the state, and shares her work at galleries across southern New Jersey. As a Quaker who leans left, she cartoons daily in support of kindness, unions and honesty. Plus, she snorkels and boogie boards whenever she can.
