Square is the most ordinary shape we know, and one of the most loaded words. It's the object — the tile, the box, the canvas, the town square. It's a descriptor — even, balanced, stable, fair and square. It's what a number does when it multiplies itself. It's the friend who never quite gets the joke — she's such a square — and it's the playground game of four squares, and the moment you square up to something and face it head on.

We're asking artists to show us where Square lives in their work: as the shape of a composition, a structure underneath it, a sense of balance, a quiet shape inside a larger picture, or an attitude.

Squares is our short holiday show, and it's our gift to the community — affordable original work for people who love art and want to give it. We'll be prioritizing work priced at $450 or less.
